Jazz
Jazz dance technique comes out of ballet. The essence of Jazz is
entertainment, the movements are big and exaggerated. This is
commonly used in Broadway shows, movies, and TV. Between
1900-1950 Jazz was born out of tap dancing which was performed with
Jazz music in the Afro-American culture, and was influenced by the
birth of modern dance. Over time it evolved into the Broadway
style we are familiar with today.
Tap
From Fred Astire and Ginger Rogers, Shirley
Temple and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, to the more recent Savion Glover.
In its basic form tap is nothing more then two pieces of metal screwed
onto shoes hammering out a percussive rhythm.
Modern
Modern dance was formed by pioneers who decided to
rebel against the formal and ridged ways of ballet. Unlike
ballet, modern dance became more grounded, free flowing, and
physically natural. Modern dancers give into gravity much more
then the ballet dancers who seem to be constantly lifted and somewhat
ridged. Ballet dancers are also restricted to very specific steps
and positions, while the modern dancer isn't bound to these
restrictions, but instead enjoys any and every form of movement.
Movement in modern dance has become an exaggeration of natural
movement. For instance, artists may use the law of gravity to
create movement phrases. Resisting gravity may be rising and
jumping, and giving into gravity would be falling or diving. This
is known as fall and recovery. Other movements qualities are
contract and release, arching suspension etc.
Although ballet and modern dance were created to be as opposite as
possible, it is now understood that in order for a modern dancer to
perform the movement well, there is still a level of technique that
must be learned and acquired. Many modern companies require their
dancers to take a ballet class in order to have this control over the
body that dance requires. In addition to this many ballet
companies include some level of modern dance in their repertory.
In spite of ill beginnings now modern and ballet share some level of
relationship.
Hip Hop
As seen in mainstream music videos
Irish
Irish dance came about because the Irish were being
oppressed by the
British. The Irish people were unable to dance, so in order to
keep their jigs and reels alive, they would dance only with their feet,
keeping their arms by their sides so as not to be caught by the
British. The dances and folk dances were passed
down
from generation to generation keeping Irish dance alive. This
has formed into the Irish dancing we see today, with the upper body
straight, and dancing only with the feet.
